Call for Proposals: Provost’s Teaching Fellows Program

February 13, 2023

Dear Rutgers–New Brunswick Faculty,

I am pleased to announce the third consecutive year of the Provost’s Teaching Fellows Program, which supports pedagogical innovations designed to improve learning outcomes for our students.

Rutgers–New Brunswick launched this initiative in partnership with the Office of Teaching Evaluation and Assessment Research (OTEAR) as a way to support faculty excellence and student success through the adoption of new practices and redesigned courses.

We are now recruiting faculty to serve as Provost’s Teaching Fellows for the 2023-24 academic year. The program will include full cohort sessions to share goals and build networks, as well as small group consultations focused on different elements of course redesign. A $2,000 research stipend will support each fellow. Applications are due March 24, 2023.

We welcome applications from faculty who wish to redesign a course being taught in Fall 2023 in one of the following ways:

  • Community Engaged Teaching
Instructors will develop course activities and assessments that involve students with the problems, challenges, and real-life initiatives of their communities.
  • Adopt Flipped Instruction with Active Learning
Instructors will learn how to “flip” their instruction by having students complete the introduction of content individually through activities such as readings and recorded lectures at home and then using class time for collaboration, higher-order thinking, problem-solving, practice, and activities that deepen understanding and make connections.
  • Building Aligned Authentic Assessments
Instructors will learn to develop assessments that align with learning outcomes and require students to apply what they have learned in ways that realistically mirror the practical use of course knowledge.

Commitment and Eligibility: Full-time Rutgers–New Brunswick faculty are welcome to apply. Applicants should be prepared to commit to participating in the May 17-19 in-person redesign retreat; schedule consultations and check-ins throughout the summer; present their projects on August 21; implement changes in their course in Fall 2023; and submit an evaluation report by January 31, 2024.

To learn more, please consider attending the Effective Teaching and Learning Conference on Thursday, February 23, from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Trayes Hall, Douglass Student Center, for presentations by some of the 2022-23 Provost’s Teaching Fellows. You may also email questions to ctaar@docs.rutgers.edu.

To apply, please prepare a statement of interest indicating the course you wish to redesign, the changes you would like to make, and an explanation of how they fit with one of the three themes described above. Your department chair should use this template letter to endorse your statement of interest. Please submit your application here by March 24, 2023.

Sincerely,

Francine Conway, Ph.D.
Chancellor-Provost
