Rutgers–New Brunswick Office for Research

The Rutgers–New Brunswick Office for Research serves as a strategic partner across the institution, fostering collaborations, advocating for resources, and developing communication to promote a culture of faculty and student innovative and inclusive research. The office provides advice and planning for university-wide research initiatives and priorities, including its centers and institutes, supporting Rutgers–New Brunswick and its cross-campus and chancellor-led units’ research infrastructure development. Want to collaborate? Contact us.

Our Goals

  1. Support and increase impacts of innovative inclusive research, fostering interdisciplinary and cross-campus collaboration

  2. Increase diversity in research faculty and build capacity for publicly engaged research

  3. Center research opportunities for students at all levels of training, from undergrad to graduate and postdoctoral

  4. Promote equitable infrastructure and core facilities development

Strategic Priorities and Initiatives

Chancellor's Signature Initiatives

The Chancellor’s Signature Initiatives were created to build on Rutgers’ existing research and academic strengths while expanding into emerging and high-impact areas. These initiatives are designed to spark innovation, foster interdisciplinary collaboration, and strengthen partnerships—both within the university and with external communities. Faculty, staff, and students are encouraged to engage in these efforts to help drive discovery and make meaningful contributions to pressing societal challenges.

Rutgers Climate and Energy Institute

The Rutgers Climate and Energy Institute (RCEI) brings together experts across disciplines to tackle climate change and energy challenges through research, education, and outreach. Faculty and students are encouraged to collaborate on interdisciplinary research projects, participate in community-engaged climate initiatives, and contribute to policy-relevant studies and sustainability efforts

Rutgers Artificial Intelligence and Data Science Collaboratory

The Rutgers Artificial Intelligence and Data Science Collaboratory (RAD Collaboratory) is the university's central hub for AI and data science innovation, supporting responsible, interdisciplinary research that addresses grand societal challenges. It nurtures cross-departmental research teams, hosts workshops and seminars on ethical AI, and offers student fellowships and faculty seed grants.

Task Forces

As an outgrowth of the Academic Master Plan, Provost Strategic Task Forces have been convened to develop guidance in areas which the chancellor and her leadership team deem as critical to support and grow the vision of the Rutgers–New Brunswick research and academic enterprise and its relationship to the three other chancellor-led units.

  • The mission of the Behavioral Health and Equity Task Force is to bridge our existing strengths and to promote growth in emerging areas in behavioral health and equity with the goal of advancing discovery, innovation, partnerships, interdisciplinary research, and access to research at Rutgers and beyond.

  • The Life Sciences Alliance Provost Strategic Task Force has a mission to bridge our existing strengths and promote growth in emerging areas with the goal of advancing discovery, innovation, partnerships, and interdisciplinary research and access to research at Rutgers and beyond.

Learn More About the Task Force

  • Climate Change Initiative

The Climate Change Initiative Advisory Group was tasked with:

    • Developing a proposal to re-envision all existing Rutgers–New Brunswick-wide climate/environmental systems/energy centers, programs, and faculty into a new framework.
    • Proposing a working Mission and Vision Statement and set of Initial Strategic Plan Goals, Key Objectives and Results (OKR) that spans domains of Research, Education and Policy
    • Determining possible reporting structures and organizational leadership and makeup.
    • Envisioning a new budgetary system with a general idea of what commitments NB Schools/Centers/Institutes and the Chancellor's office would need to make to provide a core set of resources that will be mutually supported.

    Cyberinfrastructure and Data Science

The Task Force on Cyberinfrastructure & Data Science was charged with investigating the intellectual, institutional, and technological landscape at Rutgers–New Brunswick and its peers, and recommending approaches for the institution to integrate, coordinate, and expand its intellectual strengths in artificial intelligence, data science, and cyberinfrastructure.

    Publicly Engaged/Community Engaged Scholarship

In 2019, the Executive Vice President of Academic Affairs (EVPAA) and a faculty task force published a document to broadly define publicly engaged scholarship for Rutgers University. Since then it has been used by all Chancellor-led schools, centers, and institutes for the purpose of facilitating the tenure and promotion process for those who do publicly engaged/community engaged scholarship (P/CES). Now, and as part of the Academic Master Plan launch, the Office of the Chancellor has established a P/CES Task Force of faculty across Rutgers–New Brunswick charged with making recommendations to the Chancellor and the Deans’ Cabinet in order to provide further guidance for the implementation of the general policy outlined by the EVPAA.

Limited Submission Opportunities

Limited Submissions are funding opportunities where the sponsor has a limited number of applications accepted from one institution or organization. There are two types of LSOs: university-wide and per Chancellor-led unit. If you are interested in submitting for a New Brunswick CLU LSO, you must complete the Limited Submission Opportunity Intent to Submit Form and inform your research dean.
