Some fellowships require a Rutgers nomination or endorsement meaning you must first apply through the Office of Distinguished Fellowships at Rutgers–New Brunswick. There are also many fellowships that allow you to apply on your own. However, we still encourage all interested students to meet with our experts for support and advice throughout the application process.

  • The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program offers grants for undergraduate students to pursue academic studies abroad. The program aims to support students who have been traditionally under-represented in study abroad, including students with high financial need, students in fields such as the sciences and engineering, students with diverse ethnic backgrounds, and students with disabilities. The program encourages students to choose non-traditional study abroad destinations, especially those outside of Western Europe, Australia and New Zealand. Gilman Scholarships are funded through the International Academic Opportunity Act of 2000 and sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of State.

    Recipients use the award to defray eligible study abroad costs. These costs include program tuition, room and board, books, local transportation, insurance and international airfare. Award amounts will vary depending on the length of study and student need; the average award is approximately $5,000.

    Eligibility and Qualifications
    • Applicants must be U.S. citizens.
    • Applicants must be applying or accepted to a study abroad program eligible for credit by the student's accredited institution of higher education in the U.S.
    • Applicants must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant during the term of his/her study abroad.
    • Applicants must be studying abroad for at least four weeks in one country. Programs going to more than one country are eligible if the student will be studying in one country for at least four consecutive weeks.

    All recipients are required to carry out a Follow-on Project that promotes international education and the Gilman Scholarship Program at the students' home institution or in their home community. The Follow-on Project Proposal, Statement of Purpose essay, and the applicant's academic progress are criteria that are closely considered during the selection process.     MARCH 2023 Deadline

    The March 2023 Deadline application will open in mid-January 2023 for applicants whose in-person programs or internships start between May 1, 2023 to April 30, 2024. This cycle encompasses Summer 2023, Fall 2023, Academic Year 2023-2024, and Spring 2024 programs or internships. The application deadline is Thursday, March 9, 2023 at 11:59pm Pacific Time, and the advisor certification deadline is Thursday, March 16, 2023.

    All applicants are notified of their status via email. All advisors will also be notified of scholarship recipients via email and will have access to the status of each student in their Gilman Advisor account.

    If an applicant is not selected for the March 2023 Deadline, they may re-apply for the next cycle as long as they continue to meet the eligibility requirements and their program or internship falls within the start dates.

    OCTOBER 2023 Deadline

    The October 2023 Deadline application will open in mid-August 2023 for applicants whose in-person programs or internships start between December 1, 2023, to October 31, 2024. This cycle encompasses Winter or January term 2024, Spring 2024, Maymester 2024, Summer 2024, Fall 2024, and Academic Year 2024-2025 programs. The application deadline is Tuesday, October 3, 2023, at 11:59pm Pacific Time, and the advisor certification deadline is Tuesday, October 10, 2023. Please be aware that the application deadline is in Pacific Time and take into consideration any time difference as you prepare to submit your application.

  • The Gilman-DAAD Germany Scholarships program is a partnership between the U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A Gilman Scholarship Program and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). This scholarship supports a wider effort between the United States and Germany to increase and diversify international student mobility among German and American higher education institutions. Successful applicants will receive a study grant of up to $5,000 to be used toward tuition, housing, travel, and related costs for up to one academic year in Germany.

  • The Barry Goldwater Scholarship was authorized by the United States Congress in 1986 to honor Senator Barry Goldwater who served his country for fifty-six years as a soldier and statesman, including thirty years of service in the US Senate. The Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation aims to provide a continuing source of highly qualified scientists, mathematicians, and engineers by awarding scholarships to college students who intend to pursue research careers in these fields.

    The Foundation will award approximately 300 undergraduate scholarships to outstanding students in the spring for use during the following academic years. The awards will be made on the basis of merit to two groups of students – rising juniors and rising seniors. Each scholarship covers expenses for undergraduate tuition, books, fees, and room and board, up to a maximum of $7,500 annually. Rising juniors are eligible for a maximum of two years of scholarly support, and rising seniors are eligible for a maximum of one year of scholarship support. Each university may nominate 4 students a year.

    Eligibility and Qualifications

    To be considered for nomination as a Goldwater Scholar, a student must meet the following eligibility criteria

    • Be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident or national from the 50 States, District of Columbia, Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam, United States Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Republic of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Republic of Palau, and any other territory or possession of the United States. A permanent resident must submit a photocopy of their Permanent Resident Card, also known as a Green Card.
    • have one or two years left before graduation ("sophomore" or "junior")
    • have a strong GPA (usually 3.7+)
    • Intend to pursue a STEM research career and have at least one research experience by the time of application

    In awarding scholarships, the Foundation will consider the nominee's field of study and career objectives and the extent to which that individual has the commitment and potential to make a significant contribution to his or her field. It is expected that students selected as scholars will pursue advanced degrees.

    The Office of Distinguished Fellowships will review all applications and nominate up to four candidates for consideration by the Goldwater Foundation. Application materials are due to the Office of Distinguished Fellowships by the campus deadline, December 2, 2024

  • The Graduate Women In Science (GWIS) National Fellowship Program promotes knowledge in the natural and social sciences and encourages women’s academic and professional careers in the sciences. Endowment funds, mostly generated from bequests, provide the annual income that supports scientific research conducted by GWIS fellowship winners. During the 2022-2023 funding cycle, we distributed $50,000 in research awards to seven outstanding women scientists and recognized eighteen graduate students and eight early-career honorable mentions. Since 2008, we have awarded nearly $750,000 in research awards.

    ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION:

    • We strive to empower a community representative of all women in STEM, Life Science, and related Social Science fields. In support of our mission to cultivate a strong global community, GWIS seeks to recognize merit-based scholarship and sustained personal engagement with underrepresented communities.
    • Awards will be made to women who hold a degree from a recognized institution of higher learning, who demonstrate outstanding ability and promise in research and are performing hypothesis-driven research at any institution in the U.S. or abroad. Any person who identifies as a woman in science, irrespective of race, religion, nationality, creed, national origin, sexual orientation, or age is welcome to apply.
    • The career level (e.g. graduate student through assistant professor) of the candidate will be taken into consideration when reviewing the proposals.
    • GWIS membership is required by the application deadline (click here to join). Please note that membership approval can take up to 48 hours to process, so if you want to become a GWIS member, please do so in advance.
    • Financial need for research funding is a requirement for the application. Projects that have already been fully funded by another agency or organization will be ineligible. Applicants must indicate all pending sources on the application form, as reviewers will consider these factors when assessing the project’s financial need. If at any point, the applicant accepts another award prior to being notified of the GWIS Fellowship Program’s decision, the applicant should immediately notify the program at fellowships@gwis.org.

  • The Hertz Fellowships provides fuel for graduate students with the most exceptional potential. It grants them the freedom to pursue bold ideas, powerful collaborations, and promising opportunities—even if it means changing course at times or pursuing unexpected challenges. The Hertz Fellowship provides financial and lifelong professional support for the nation’s most promising graduate students in science and technology. The fellowship includes up to five years of funding and the freedom to pursue innovative projects wherever they may lead. In addition, fellows take part in on going mentoring, symposia, and workshops with our vibrant community of more than 1200 fellows, a set of peers who span disciplines, generations, and geography.

    All eligible applicants must:

    • be college seniors, first-year graduate students, or in a gap year preparing to apply to graduate school;
    • intend to pursue a PhD in the applied physical and biological sciences, mathematics, or engineering;

    We do not award fellowships to applicants pursuing professional degrees other than a PhD, such as an MD, JD, MBA, DPH, or DVM. However, we will support the PhD portion of an MD/PhD program.

  • NOAA's Ernest F. Hollings Undergraduate Scholarship recognizes outstanding students studying in NOAA mission fields. Scholars receive up to $9,500 per academic year to support their studies, as well as paid summer internship opportunities at NOAA facilities across the U.S. Hollings alumni report that the experience influenced their academic and career paths, expanded their professional networks and improved their skills for working in NOAA mission fields. Of Hollings scholars surveyed, 100% would recommend this opportunity to other students.

    The Ernest F. Hollings Undergraduate Scholarship Program was established through the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2005 (PL 108-447) to honor retiring Senator Ernest F. Hollings (D - South Carolina). The purposes of the program are to:

    Increase undergraduate training in oceanic and atmospheric science, research, technology, and education and foster multidisciplinary training opportunities;

    Increase public understanding and support for stewardship of the ocean and atmosphere and improve environmental literacy;

    Recruit and prepare students for public service careers with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and other natural resource and science agencies at the federal, state and local levels of government; and,

    Recruit and prepare students for careers as teachers and educators in oceanic and atmospheric science and to improve scientific and environmental education in the United States.

    Eligibility and Qualifications

    To be eligible to apply for the Hollings Scholarship, at the time of application (annually September through January) applicants must:

    • Be a U.S. citizen.
    • Be currently enrolled or accepted at an accredited college or university within the United States or U.S. territories as either:
      • a full-time 2nd year student in a four-year undergraduate program
      • a full-time 3rd year student in a five-year undergraduate program
      • a community college or transfer student who is applying to a four-year institution
        • Community college or transfer applicants must provide proof of application to a four-year institution when submitting their application for the scholarship.
        • If accepted for the Hollings Scholarship, applicants must submit proof of acceptance prior to starting the program.

    • Earn and maintain a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent on another identified scale) each term, as well as an overall GPA of 3.0 in your major field of study.
      • The GPA requirement applies throughout the period of undergraduate studies: prior to and at the time of application for a scholarship, for the period between application and award notification, and after award distribution.
    • Have and maintain a declared major in a discipline including, but not limited to: oceanic, environmental, biological, and atmospheric sciences, mathematics, engineering, remote sensing technology, computer and information science, physical and social sciences including geography, physics, hydrology, geomatics, or teacher education that support NOAA's programs and mission.

  • The Humanity in Action Summer Fellows Program (HIA) summer fellows program brings together international groups of college students and recent graduates to explore different national histories of discrimination and resistance, as well as issues affecting minority groups today. Programs take place in Amsterdam, Berlin, Copenhagen, Lyon, and Warsaw.

    The HIA summer fellows program facilitates a collective exploration of the social and political roots of discrimination, and provides a forum where potential solutions can be considered and discussed. Fellows meet with journalists, politicians, activists, and academics to discuss strategies for protecting minorities and promoting human rights. Following the summer programs, HIA Fellows complete an Action Project, engaging human rights or minority issues in their home institutions or communities. HIA covers the costs of participation and accommodation during the summer fellows program.

    After completing an HIA summer fellows program, HIA Fellows are invited to join the global network of HIA Senior Fellows. The Senior Fellows support their members' continuing engagement and professional development though annual meetings, conferences, and financial support for individual and collaborative action projects.

    Applicants to the HIA fellowship programs must be currently enrolled undergraduates or recent graduates. All majors and academic disciplines are encouraged to apply.

    Selections are made on the basis of demonstrated commitment to minority rights and social justice, evidence of leadership potential, significant academic achievement, and social maturity.

    Applicants can apply to the American Program and/or the European Programs, but can only participate in one. Applicants to the European Programs may not apply to a program in a specific country and cannot choose their city of participation.

  • James Madison Fellowships were created by Congress to honor James Madison's legacy and Madisonian principles by providing support for graduate degrees that focuses on the Constitution – its roots, its formation, its principles, and its development. The benefits of the fellowship program are manifold and lasting. While in graduate schools, Fellows will gain a deeper understanding of the principles of constitutional government, which they in turn transmit to their students. In the process, they form professional ties that can significantly influence their career aspirations. In this way, the James Madison Fellowships ensure that the spirit and practical wisdom of the Constitution will guide the actions of future generations of American citizens.

    Junior Fellowships are awarded to outstanding college seniors and college graduates without teaching experience who intend to become secondary school teachers of American history, American government, or civics in grades 7-12. Junior Fellows are expected to complete graduate study within two academic years of full-time study.

    Fellowship applicants compete only against other applicants from the state of their legal residence with the exception of some privately funded fellowships. To be eligible to apply for a fellowship, you must:

    • Be a teacher, or plan to become a teacher, of American history, American government, or civics at the secondary school level (grades 7-12).
    • Possess a bachelor's degree or plan to receive a bachelor's degree no later than August 31 of the year in which you are applying.

  • The Phi Beta Kappa Society is a leading national advocate for the value of arts and sciences education. Our newest program and scholarship opportunity, Key into Public Service, highlights the wide range of opportunities for arts, humanities, natural science, social science, and mathematics majors to pursue rewarding careers in the public sector.

    Each scholar will receive a $5,000 undergraduate scholarship and will participate in a conference that provides training, mentoring, and reflection on pathways into local, state, and federal government careers.

    The Society has now opened our 2022 Key into Public Service application cycle for our 2023 cohort of scholars.  Arts and sciences students attending chapter institutions can apply here until January 23, 2023. PBK membership is not a prerequisite. Characteristics of ideal recipients include intellectual curiosity, breadth, and depth of liberal arts and sciences coursework, leadership propensity, and service to others.

    • Applicants must be enrolled at one of Phi Beta Kappa’s 292 chapter institutions. Membership in Phi Beta Kappa is not required for eligibility. 
    • Applicants should expect to graduate between 10/1/2023 and 8/1/2025. First-year students and seniors who will graduate in Spring 2023 are NOT eligible. 
    • Applicants must have a minimum grade point average of 3.5 while demonstrating academic excellence in your arts, humanities, mathematics, natural science, or social science major.

    • Successful applicants will demonstrate 1) an interest in working in local, state, or federal government service; and 2) breadth and depth in the arts, humanities, mathematics, natural sciences, and social sciences.
    • Applicants will also need to provide the name of a professor or faculty member who can attest to your academic achievements and/or interest in public service.
    • Applicants must also commit to attend the convening for all award recipients taking place June 21-25, 2023 in Washington, D.C. This mandatory convening will provide training and mentoring opportunities and showcase pathways from liberal arts and sciences education into active citizenship and public service. The Society will provide transportation, lodging, and meal per diems. The Society may switch the format to a virtual event if needed to ensure the safety and health of all participants.

    Preferred Characteristics for Applicants:

    • Intellectual Curiosity: Ideas excite you and you learn from many viewpoints. You are passionate about your arts and sciences education, and eager to learn more about the world around you.
    • Breadth and Interdisciplinary Depth: You demonstrate academic excellence in your arts, humanities, mathematics, natural science, or social science major with a minimum 3.5 grade point average. In addition, you also take a range of coursework outside your primary field of interest as demonstrated in your transcript and can communicate why a well-rounded education matters. 
    • Leadership: You can identify how you influence others positively, either on or off campus through academic research, campus extracurricular activities, internships, employment, or community organizing.
    • Service to Others: You would like to pursue a career in government or another form of public service to serve the common good. You can show a meaningful commitment to others by your participation in volunteer/community service activities.

  • Knight-Hennessy scholars develop deep domain expertise in their Stanford graduate program, and build on this domain expertise through exposure to a wide range of disciplines and cultures within the Knight-Hennessy Scholars (KHS) community. Scholars participate in the King Global Leadership Program (KGLP), which includes workshops, lectures, projects, and experiences that strengthen transformational leadership capabilities. Through KGLP, scholars collaborate and prepare to address important challenges and opportunities facing the world, such as climate change, healthcare, government and policy, and education.

    Knight-Hennessy scholars receive up to three years of funding to pursue graduate studies at Stanford. This includes the JD, MA, MBA, MD, MFA, MS, DMA, and PhD programs, as well as joint- and dual-degrees.
