Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education at Rutgers–New Brunswick

May 5, 2020

Dear Colleagues,

As Rutgers–New Brunswick continues to weather the current challenges, we are resolute, now more than ever, in our mission to provide a first-rate education to all students. The Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education plays a key role in this mission by ensuring the strength of our academic programs and experiences and providing leadership in all undergraduate academic planning.

I would like share news of an important transition in the Office of the Provost at Rutgers–New Brunswick. After completing five years of service as Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education, and previously, Vice Chancellor for Undergraduate Academic Affairs (UAA), Dr. Ben Sifuentes-Jáuregui is stepping down effective June 30, 2020. I would like to especially thank Dr. Sifuentes-Jáuregui, for his steadfast leadership of the erstwhile UAA and notably for his commitment to meeting the needs of our diverse student population. Among his many accomplishments, he served as the Chair of the Task Force on Transfer Students and the Task Force on Non-Traditional Students, collaborated on the creation of the RU-1st initiative, and charged several major committees on a broad spectrum of key academic issues. Upon stepping down, Dr. Sifuentes-Jáuregui will return to the faculty in the School of Arts and Sciences, where he previously served as Chair of American Studies and Undergraduate Director in Comparative Literature.

I am pleased that Dr. Carolyn Moehling will succeed in this role as Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education, effective July 1, 2020. Dr. Moehling will lead the campus-wide coordination of enhancing educational opportunities and success for over 36,000 undergraduate students across 13 academic units at Rutgers–New Brunswick. She will convene the undergraduate academic deans of the varied academic schools at New Brunswick and help to develop a campus policy and guidance on our academic practices and cross-institutional academic initiatives.

Dr. Moehling is a Professor of Economics and currently serves as Senior Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education in the School of Arts and Sciences, where she provides leadership in various areas, including the recent review and revision of the Core Curriculum and in building the Teaching and Learning team within the School of Arts and Sciences Office of Undergraduate Education. Prior to joining the Dean’s Office, she served as the Undergraduate Director for the Department of Economics. Dr. Moehling earned a Ph.D. from Northwestern University and held appointment at Yale University before joining Rutgers–New Brunswick in 2006. Dr. Moehling is a devoted teacher and advisor; she has received the School of Arts and Sciences Award for Distinguished Contributions to Undergraduate Education and the Rutgers University Scholar-Teacher Award.

Dr. Moehling is joining us at a pivotal juncture in our academic planning. Presently, Dr. Moehling has been working closely with Vice Dean Susan Lawrence from the School of Arts and Sciences in leading the Academic Continuity Working Group for Rutgers–New Brunswick at my request. Given her wealth of knowledge as a professor and administrator, I am confident that Dr. Moehling will provide the leadership necessary in her new role to navigate the current challenges and ensure that we continue to deliver a high-quality education to our students.

Please join me in thanking Dr. Sifuentes-Jáuregui for his dedicated service, and in welcoming Dr. Moehling as the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education at Rutgers–New Brunswick.

Sincerely,

Prabhas V. Moghe
Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor for Research and Academic Affairs
Distinguished Professor
