The Rutgers Swing Dance Club and the Dance Department at Mason Gross School of the Arts invite you to join the inaugural class on Lindy Hop for people who are blind and visually impaired. We will be joined by the current class of the Joseph Kohn Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired, as well as a number of students, faculty, and professors from the Mason Gross Dance Department, and members of the Rutgers Swing Dance Club. This dance lesson will be open to all students, faculty, staff, and community members.

History:
Lindy Hop is a social partner dance that originated in Harlem, New York in 1928 and was danced throughout the 30's and 40's. It was born in the Savoy Ballroom in Black Harlem, one of the first ballrooms open to people of color. As a rebellious street dance, it lacked the formality of traditional ballroom styles, while combining elements of African traditional dance and European partner dance.

What to Know Before You Go:
This lesson is geared specifically toward people who are blind or vision-impaired, but all are welcome! No partner or specific clothing are necessary. Just wear comfortable shoes. If you have black soles that will mark the floor, we may ask you to take off your shoes, so please wear socks! Come dance to some jazz music and learn the basics of this playful, energetic dance style! Lindy Hoppers are a very friendly bunch.
