Director of the Institute for Women's Leadership
September 30, 2019
Dear Members of the Rutgers–New Brunswick Community,
Today, I am excited to announce that Dr. Rebecca Mark has been appointed the Director of the Institute for Women’s Leadership (IWL) and Professor of Women’s and Gender Studies effective January 1, 2020.
The Institute for Women's Leadership at Rutgers is a consortium of nine units based at Rutgers–New Brunswick and dedicated to the study of women and gender, to advocacy on behalf of gender equity, and to the promotion of women’s leadership locally, nationally and globally. As IWL Director, Dr. Mark is the intellectual and administrative leader of the consortium and will champion issues that concern gender and the advancement of women to further shape the direction, define the purposes, and set the broad-based agendas of the IWL. Dr. Mark will also hold responsibility for the development of programs and initiatives to foster women's leadership.
Dr. Mark joins us from Tulane University where she currently serves as Chair of the Department of English and Professor of American Literature. She is also the founding director of the Newcomb College Institute that she helped transform into an internationally recognized institute for the education of undergraduate women. Dr. Mark brings a wealth of knowledge as an accomplished teacher, scholar, and seasoned administrator. I know Dr. Mark will bring great value to the Rutgers community and the Institute for Women’s Leadership as an advocate and thought leader to further advance our mission and the international prominence of the institute.
Our university also owes a great debt of gratitude to the members of the IWL Search Committee Chaired by Board of Governors Zora Neale Hurston Distinguished Professor Cheryl Wall (School of Arts and Sciences).
Please join me in welcoming Dr. Mark to the Rutgers family.
Sincerely,
Chancellor Christopher Molloy
