Protecting Our DACA Students

Dear Members of the Rutgers University–New Brunswick Community,

A federal district court recently issued an order directing the Trump Administration to resume accepting renewal applications for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). Last weekend, the administration issued a response to the court order, which included steps for filing renewal applications for those who are eligible. I have urged all eligible Rutgers–New Brunswick DACA students to contact the Rutgers Immigrant Community Assistance Project (RICAP) for free consultation and assistance. We have also recently hired a case manager who will provide additional advocacy and support for undocumented students.

All of the Chancellors across Rutgers and President Barchi are working with colleagues nationwide to improve how our higher education institutions support international and immigrant students on our campuses. We are encouraging all members of the Rutgers community to increase their awareness of these issues and current federal policy, so together, we can do just that.

Let me emphasize that Rutgers considers ending the DACA program to be inconsistent with American values. We recognize the stress that our undocumented students are experiencing, and we are actively supporting them with a range of resources during this difficult time. Rest assured that Rutgers will steadfastly protect the privacy of all our students and their records and vigorously advocate for the continuation of DACA policy. We also continue to encourage support for the BRIDGE Act, a bipartisan federal bill that would extend DACA protections until comprehensive immigration reform is enacted.
