We Stand United

Dear Members of the Rutgers Community,

One week ago today, we learned about the brutal acts that took place in Jersey City. As the details unfolded in the days that followed, we learned more about the victims and the intention behind the attack.

The events that took place right in our backyard were motivated by hatred and narrow-mindedness and once again, we find ourselves consoling one another as we denounce intolerance and violence.

The continuous pattern of bias-fueled attacks, including the recent incident that is being investigated at Indiana University, reminds us there are strides to be made in fostering a community of inclusion. We each play a role in this effort, which begins right here within our Rutgers campus. As one of the most diverse universities in one of the most diverse states in the nation, we can be an example to others as we continue to uphold our values and embrace all members of our community regardless of religion, race, political beliefs, gender, and other backgrounds. 

On behalf of our students, faculty, staff, and alumni, we extend our condolences to the victims' families, friends, and community members who are impacted by this tragedy.

As we mourn and reflect, we continue to stand against bigotry and cruelty and remain united with each member of the Rutgers community as we reaffirm our commitment to bettering the world.
