Supporting Our International Students

April 8, 2025

Dear Rutgers–New Brunswick Community,

Some of our international students have recently experienced unexpected terminations of their lawful U.S. residency status. This pressing issue demands our attention. This matter is not unique to Rutgers; universities across the country are reporting similar visa revocations, as noted in President Holloway’s April 6 communication, but it has created a great deal of uncertainty and concern especially among our international community.

Rutgers–New Brunswick has a longstanding practice of providing our students with robust systems of support, as reflected in the Student Success pillar of our Academic Master Plan. We remain fully committed to connecting our students with the assistance they need, and to upholding the due process rights tied to immigration status.

If you or someone you know is facing visa revocation or related challenges, please contact Rutgers Global – International Student Services immediately at immigration@global.rutgers.edu so we can provide timely support and guidance. I encourage you to visit Rutgers Global Alerts for the most up-to-date information and guidance on immigration-related updates.

In addition:

  • The Office of the Dean of Students is helping with housing needs, emergency student funding grants, and other practical needs through resources including the Basic Needs Center.
  • We are aware that unexpected expenses can impact students’ ability to perform academically. Our long-established Emergency Aid Fund is available for need-based support.
  • The Rutgers Immigrant Community Assistance Project (RICAP) offers free and confidential legal consultations.

Rutgers also offers general resources for students and community members in need of support:

  • Support for Undocumented Students
  • Student Legal Services
  • Residence Life Student Support
  • Cultural Center Collaborative
  • Mental health and wellness resources for students (and a PDF)
  • Mental health and wellness resources for employees
  • ScarletWell resources for integrating well-being into our campus culture and individual lives

As I shared with our campus community last Friday, Rutgers–New Brunswick remains steadfast in its commitment to:

  • Supporting every student
  • Delivering a world-class education
  • Upholding our core values including academic freedom, freedom of expression, and community safety
  • Defending the rights and dignity of all, free from bias and discrimination

Rutgers–New Brunswick is a leader in producing successful graduates. Our impact is made stronger by the diverse backgrounds and perspectives woven through our intellectual community and the communities we serve. We deeply value the contributions of our international students and scholars, who enrich our classrooms, enliven our campus, and prepare all members of our community for meaningful engagement in an increasingly interconnected world.

Sincerely,

Francine Conway, Ph.D.
Chancellor and Distinguished Professor
