An Important Message to Our Students

April 4, 2025

Dear Rutgers–New Brunswick Students,

In times of change, uncertainty affects each of us differently. Some of you may feel anxious about recent federal actions and their potential impact on your academic journey and future.

Over the past weeks, I have met with faculty and staff who have shared many of your concerns, including potential interruptions in financial support, disruptions to research and academic progress, uncertainty surrounding immigration policies, and the ability to continue your studies in the United States; concerns for personal safety, especially in light of reports of student detentions at other universities; worries for friends, classmates, and members of the broader community who may be directly affected; and many more that I may not have mentioned here.

While we may not yet have all the answers, I want to assure you that Rutgers–New Brunswick leadership is unwavering in our commitment to support you and uphold our mission: to provide a world-class education while staying true to our core values—academic freedom, freedom of expression, student safety, and an environment free from bias and discrimination. No matter your circumstances, Rutgers–New Brunswick remains steadfast in fostering a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment for all students.

Our university leadership is not just closely monitoring these developments but also actively working to anticipate and address potential challenges. We are engaging in advocacy to support and protect the interests of our students.

In the coming weeks, I will invite students to meet with me and my leadership team so we can hear from you directly. My office will share more details soon. You are not alone. We will continue listening, working alongside faculty and staff, and providing the support needed to navigate these changes. Coming together as a university community can help shape the path forward.

If you are seeking guidance or support, Rutgers offers a range of resources:

  • Office of the Dean of Students—Advocacy, Outreach and Support
  • Support for Undocumented Students
  • Rutgers Immigrant Community Assistance Project (RICAP)
  • Student Legal Services
  • Residence Life Student Support
  • Cultural Center Collaborative
  • Mental health and wellness resources for students (and a PDF)
  • Mental health and wellness resources for employees
  • ScarletWell resources for integrating well-being into our campus culture and individual lives

Your well-being, success, and safety remain our highest priorities. No matter your concerns or experiences, know that Rutgers is here to support you. We will continue to keep you informed as new information becomes available.

Sincerely,

Francine Conway, Ph.D.
Chancellor and Distinguished Professor
