Submit Nominations by March 1! Chancellor and Provost Awards for Faculty Excellence

January 30, 2024

Dear Colleagues:

Our Rutgers–New Brunswick faculty continually demonstrate excellence in their contributions to teaching, scholarly inquiry, and service.

I am pleased to announce that my office, in conjunction with the Office of the Provost, is now accepting nominations for the 2023-2024 Chancellor and Provost Awards for Faculty Excellence. These awards celebrate the ways our faculty meet the needs of our students, communities, and the world.

The deadline for nominations, as outlined below, is Friday, March 1. We will come together in April to celebrate the exceptional faculty who have distinguished themselves in these areas.

We invite nominations for the following Chancellor and Provost Awards for Faculty Excellence:

Teaching Awards

Provost Award for Excellence in Teaching: The award honors a faculty member (Professor or Distinguished Professor, tenure track or non-tenure track) whose teaching contributions resulted in an extraordinary impact on the institution, students’ experiences, and public engagement.

Provost Award for Excellence in Teaching Innovations: An award extended to a faculty member (Assistant or Associate Professor, tenure track or non-tenure track) whose teaching practices involve innovative approaches to enhance learning outcomes, new forms of pedagogy especially inclusive pedagogy, experiential practices, instructional technologies, or innovative multimedia.

Provost Award for Excellence in Teaching by a Lecturer: The award celebrates the valuable contributions of a lecturer faculty member to the teaching mission of the University.

Scholarly Inquiry Awards

Provost Award for Pioneering Research: The award honors a faculty member (Professor or Distinguished Professor, tenure track) whose research contributions have transformed the field, including highly cited scholarship or practiced patents.

Provost Community/Publicly Engaged Scholarship Lifetime Achievement Award: This award recognizes senior faculty members (tenure track or non-tenure track) who demonstrate a record of outstanding and sustained accomplishment in community/publicly engaged scholarship through research, creative activity, teaching, and/or service and practice over the span of a career. It is expected that nominees for this award will be in the later stages of their career. Given the special nature of this distinction, it is not expected to be an annual award, but will be conferred on occasions when the extraordinary accomplishments of a faculty member warrant.

Provost Award for Excellence in Community/Publicly Engaged Scholarship: This award honors a faculty member (Assistant or Associate, tenure track or non-tenure track) whose scholarship integrates community engagement as a vital component of their work. Their work centers community collaboration, benefits the external community, has significant public and scholarly impact, is disseminated through both traditional and non-traditional outlets, and reflects the mission of Rutgers-New Brunswick.

Provost Award for Excellence in Cross-Disciplinary Research: The award honors a faculty member (Assistant or Associate Professor, tenure track or non-tenure track) whose research area disrupts or transforms the interface of two disparate fields of scholarship or inquiry.

Service Awards

Chancellor Award for Excellence in Mentoring: This award honors a faculty member (Associate Professor, Professor, or Distinguished Professor, tenure track or non-tenure-track) for their exceptional contributions toward mentoring post-doctoral researchers and/or early or mid-career faculty, and toward advancing the next generation of scholars.

Chancellor Award for Excellence in Service: The award honors a faculty member (all ranks, tenure track or non-tenure track) whose outstanding service to their school or the campus advances the university’s mission to perform public service to support the needs of the greater Rutgers–New Brunswick community or residents of the state.

Impact Awards

Chancellor Award for Global Impact: The award honors a faculty member (all ranks, tenure track or non-tenure track) whose research, teaching, or service has catalyzed global partnerships or generated global impacts and exceptional public engagement globally.

Chancellor Award for Excellence in STEM Diversity: The award honors a faculty member (Assistant or Associate Professor, tenure track or non-tenure track) whose work aims to increase diversity and inclusion in STEM fields through innovative approaches in pedagogy and teaching practices, research, and/or community engagement.

Award recipients will be honored at a Celebration of Faculty Excellence toward the end of the Spring 2024 semester. Additionally, each honoree will receive an institutional award of $5,000. In some instances, more than one awardee will be selected and the award will be shared.

The deadline for nominations is Friday, March 1, 2024.

  • Deans, department chairs, and colleagues are invited to submit nominations.
  • Each nomination must include a 300-word summary of the individual’s qualifications and up to three letters of support.
  • A committee of senior faculty members will review nominations and make recommendations to the Provost and Chancellor.

Please submit all nominations and supporting materials to nbfacultyaffairs@rutgers.edu by the deadline. More information can be found on the Chancellor Awards for Faculty Excellence website.

It is a privilege to honor and celebrate outstanding faculty members who engage in pioneering scholarship, innovative teaching, and impactful service—inspiring the next generation of citizens and extending the institution’s mission to serve the public good. Thank you for all you do for Rutgers–New Brunswick.

Sincerely,

Francine Conway, Ph.D.
Chancellor and Distinguished Professor
