Fall 2021 Course Scheduling and Registration

April 23, 2021

Dear Rutgers–New Brunswick students,

Our faculty and staff are hard at work preparing to welcome you back to campus for the Fall 2021 semester. I am writing to reaffirm that most classes for the Fall semester will include an in-person component. Many will be fully face-to-face, and some will be hybrid, with both face-to-face and online components.

Screenshot of the Fall 2021 Schedule Planner

Here are some tips to help you to identify how your course instruction will be delivered using the Rutgers’ Schedule of Classes (SOC), Course Schedule Planner (CSP), and WebReg:

  • Tip #1: To find courses with face-to-face meetings, use the search terms “Traditional/Face-to-Face” and "Hybrid."
  • Tip #2: Hybrid courses will list the days, times, campus, building, and classroom for the in-person meetings, as well as specify the format for the online component of the course.
  • Tip #3: Some courses will only be offered online, either synchronously—with required meeting times—or asynchronously with no meeting times specified.
    • The listings for online synchronous courses will specify the days and times of the class meetings and will have a campus designation of “Online.”
    • The listings for online asynchronous courses will be denoted as “Asynchronous online content” and will not include days or times for class meetings.

While we are making every effort to ensure that students return to a more traditional on-campus experience in the fall, we also are prioritizing the health and wellbeing of our campus community.

  • Our classroom enrollment has been adjusted based on current CDC guidelines.
  • Academic departments' consideration of safety precautions led to decisions to offer courses with traditionally large enrollments in an online format.
  • Our faculty and academic department leaders have been very thoughtful in creating Fall 2021 course schedules that best meet the learning needs of their students and programs.
  • Many of our academic programs offer both Face-to-Face/Hybrid and Online sections of select courses to provide students with greater flexibility.
  • Bear in mind that these plans may need to change based on factors like the progress of the pandemic and guidance from governmental authorities.

In all cases, we are committed to balancing our students' academic and safety needs, and our faculty stand ready to advise you and support your individual learning needs.

The COVID health crisis has ushered in many changes for us all. Within the State of New Jersey, eligibility for the COVID-19 vaccine has just expanded to include all residents ages 16 and older. We remain confident that vaccine availability will enable us to return to campus and the community we all miss so much. I will continue to work with our community of students and faculty as we remain vigilant and responsive to this unprecedented public health crisis.

If you have questions about your course selections, including which ones are fully on-campus or hybrid, please contact your school’s academic advising office.

I look forward to seeing you on campus in the fall.

Sincerely,

Francine Conway
Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs
