Digital Badging

Understand the approval process to submit proposals for Rutgers University–New Brunswick digital badges.

What is a Digital Badge?

Digital certification badges are web-enabled versions of credential outcomes enabling recipients to share their certified skills online. Learn more about Microcredentials and Digital Badges.

There are four types of digital badges:

  • Standalone badges
  • Academic badges
  • Professional badges
  • Student Life badges

Review and Approval Process for Digital Badge Proposals

Proposals first must be reviewed and approved at the local level.

  • Proposals originating from academic departments must be approved by their school dean's office.
  • Proposals originating from Rutgers–New Brunswick offices and programs outside the schools must be approved by the Chancellor Cabinet Officer to whom those offices report.

Once approved at the school or unit level, the team developing the badge may use the following steps to submit their proposal to the Office of the Chancellor. The proposal will be reviewed by a committee convened by the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education.

How to Submit a Digital Badge Proposal

Step 1: Review existing digital badges to determine if there is any overlap. Be able to articulate to potential participants how your badge differs from others that have similar objectives or have overlapping content or why your unit is particularly well-positioned to offer this badge. 

Step 2: Download the Proposal Guide [DOC] to review the application questions and complete your proposal form draft. If you have any questions about the proposal form, please contact nb_digitalbadging@nbcp.rutgers.edu.

Step 3: Obtain supporting documentation (i.e. digital badge image, approval from Dean’s Office or Chancellor Cabinet member).

Step 4: Submit the Rutgers–New Brunswick Digital Badging Proposal Qualtrics Form. Please note that email submissions of the Word document will not be accepted, and all submissions must be sent through the Qualtrics form.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

  • The committee will evaluate proposals based on the completeness of the information submitted and the clarity of the articulation of the learning outcomes and assessment plan. The committee's goal is twofold:

    1. support the badging initiatives put forward by the schools and units; and
    2. provide constructive feedback and resources, when needed, to help them refine their proposals.

  • All units or programs that are part of Rutgers–New Brunswick schools or administrative units must submit digital badging proposals through the Rutgers–New Brunswick process. This includes:
