In the depths of the Great Depression, New Jersey resident Walter Buren enrolled at Rutgers. Although the economic collapse of the 1930s prevented him from completing his degree, Walter’s son, grandson, and great-grandson would follow in his path to Rutgers.

A Rutgers Student's Gift for Comedy Writing Finds an Audience Well Beyond Campus
Alexandra Paskhaver is a syndicated columnist and podcast creator with a knack for seeing absurdity in tasks others find healthy and wholesome. Paskhaver began writing out her funny thoughts during her first year at Rutgers when she contributed to an SAS Honors Program blog. But over the last two years, her gently satirical take on life has caught on with audiences well beyond the university.
In 2023, she began writing humor columns for two Pennsylvania newspapers. Over the last year, her work has been distributed through the news syndicate Cagle Cartoons Inc., which reaches more than 800 media outlets.

Rutgers Students Draw on Language Skills to Help Community Organizations
Rutgers students are using their world language skills to help New Jersey nonprofits better serve vulnerable communities.
Four students recently translated thousands of words into Spanish for Disability Rights New Jersey, the state’s designated protection and advocacy organization for people with disabilities. The nonprofit has introduced an interactive tool on its website that guides young people with disabilities and their caregivers through the process of composing a comprehensive plan for their future. The translations were provided through The Language Bank, a free service at Rutgers that’s part of The Language Center in the School of Arts and Sciences.
“Knowing that it is going to help so many people is exciting,” says Eva Maria Corregidor Luna, a PhD candidate studying bilingualism and second language acquisition in the Spanish and Portuguese department.
Rutgers Computer Science Community Revives a Beloved Hangout Space for Students
Computer science students at Rutgers University seeking to decompress, connect with friends, or just get some work done have long had their own hangout spot on campus: Two classroom-sized spaces inside the Hill Center on Busch Campus originally dubbed the “Collaborative Academic Versatile Environment,” or the CAVE.
“I would spend time there, sometimes until 3:00 a.m., just hanging out with my friends or doing homework,” says Jamie Liao, a 2018 computer science graduate and a senior program coordinator in the Department of Computer Science.
Liao worked to reinvent and reimagine the space after a drop-off in use due to the pandemic. In 2025, the CAVE was officially renamed the Coding and Social Lounge (CSL). Along with the new name comes other changes aimed at reestablishing the space as the hub of the computer science student community at Rutgers.
